The Mars Cinema Group launched its first five theaters under the CGV ARTHOUSE label, in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir on May 4th.

Recently purchased by CJ CGV for USD 800 million, the Mars Cinema Group is Turkey’s largest cinema network, encompassing 785 screens in 89 locations across the country, operated under the Cinemaximum brand, which accounts for over half of the country’s box office market.

The CGV ARTHOUSE locations, which are the first mutliplexes in the country to employ the CGV label following CJ CGV’s entry into the market, will cater to cinephiles with a selection of, local low-budget fare and foreign titles, including Korean films, which are difficult to find for Turkish cinema patrons. The theaters will also collaborate with the local Korean Cultural Center to provide more Korean films to spectators during July and August. Previously, the Turkish exhibition market only counted a handful of arthouse theaters.

During an opening event at the flagship Istanbul location, KIM Jee-woon’s blockbuster film The Age of Shadows, which was last year’s major Chuseok holiday released, was screened for local press.

CGV Mars also indicated that it is working closely with the Turkish government, which is keen to support the promulgation of local low-budget cinema.
