Korean Studio Also Inks Deal for Spanish-Language Version

CJ Entertainment’s property Miss Granny, a family fantasy comedy that was a major hit in South Korea during the Lunar New Year holiday of 2014, is being prepped for two new updates aimed at the North American market, one in English, the other in Spanish.

The Korean studio has partnered with 34th Street Films, the shingle of Hollywood mogul Tyler Perry for the English version, while they signed with Eugenio Derbez’s outfit 3 Pas Studios for the Spanish language update. The Spanish version will be distributed by Pantelion Films, a subsidiary of Lionsgate, and will be released in the US and Mexico, as well as South America. Both titles are being prepared for release in 2018.

The original film, directed by HWANG Dong-hyuk of Silenced (2011), featured NA Moon-hee as an elderly woman who becomes distant from her family and one day magically transforms into her 20-year-old self, played by SHIM Eun-kyoung. The film made USD 54.48 million from 8.66 million entries.

Miss Granny was previously successfully remade in China as 20, Once Again!, where it made USD 57.4 million, and in Vietnam as Sweet 20, where it became the most successful local film of all time. A Japanese rendition was released earlier this year while Thai and Indonesian versions of the fantasy comedy will also be released soon.
