After months of dwindling sales, Korean cinemas finally came back to life in late June with the release of #ALIVE, a star-driven genre film with eerily close parallels to people’s experiences of life under Covid-19. YOO Ah-in of BURNING (2018) and Heart Blackened (2017) star PARK Shin-hye headline this zombie film based on an American script that was helmed by first-time director CHO Il-hyeong for the hit production company Zip Cinema.
YOO Ah-in plays Joon-woo, a young man who is stuck in his apartment block when a zombie outbreak takes place outside. Cut off from any form of communication and with the undead roaming the halls, he tries to survive on his own until he discovers that a young woman named Yoo-bin (PARK Shin-hye) is stuck in a unit in a neighboring building.
#ALIVE (previously known as Alone) is the latest hit zombie property to hit the Korean market in the wake of the success of TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016) and the Netflix series Kingdom. It arrived just three weeks ahead of this summer’s other zombie offering, TRAIN TO BUSAN(2016) sequel Peninsula. The story was adapted by director CHO Il-hyeong from the original English-language screenplay Alone by Matt NAYLOR, which was also produced as a low-budget Hollywood film that went into production before #ALIVE but has yet to be released.
#ALIVE has become the first Korean to exceed one million admissions in the Covid-19 Era (with 1.55 million counted as of July 6), becoming yet another success story for hit production house Zip Cinema, previously responsible for All About My Wife (2012), Cold Eyes (2013), The Priests (2015) and Master (2016), among many others.
