KOFIC Has Announced the Report on February 2017 Korean Film Industry

The Number of Viewers and the Ticket Sales Decreased
 

The number of viewers and the ticket sales of Korean box office in February 2017 have decreased. According to the report on the 2017 Korean film industry by Korean Film council (KOFIC), the total number of viewers and the total sales were 15.18 million and USD 105 million, which are 28.8% and 27.7% decrease respectively, over the same period in previous year. 

Korean films dominated the nation’s theaters with a 58.6% market share. However, the number of audiences and the ticket sales were 8.9 million and USD 62 million respectively, down 32.9% and 31.6% from the same time last year. 

Number one at the Korean box office in February was action thriller Confidential Assignment, which was released on January 18th, Lunar New Year’s holiday. Confidential Assignment brought 2.95 million moviegoers followed by crime-action thriller Fabricated City with 2.44 million admissions. Court drama New Trial, survival thriller Split and political crime thriller The King came in third, fourth and fifth drawing 2.03 million, 1.2 million and 91,000 admissions, respectively. Of the top ten movies, four were Korean and six were American. 

Meanwhile, the best performing distributor was CJ Entertainment of Confidential Assignment, which distributed Fabricated City, Trolls and four more, recording 6.06 million ticket sales and 39.9% market share. UIP Korea which distributed 11 titles including Split, Arrival and The Great Wall was second with 2.73 million viewers and 18.0% market share, while CGV ARTHOUSE which distributed three movies including New Trial reached the third place with 1.08 million admissions and 7.1% market share.
