Two sisters, Su-mi (LIM Soo-jung) and Su-yeon (MOON Geun-young) return home after a long time of recovering in Seoul. Their Japanese style wooden house is beautiful with a field full of wild flowers and a reservoir. However, strange things happen to teenage sisters in the house.
Young and beautiful stepmother Eun-joo (YUM Jung-ah) welcomes them but two sisters show hostility against her. Meanwhile, Su-yeon, who looks just like her late mother, feels somebody where there is nobody but the family, and Su-mi sees a ghost. Eun-joo goes into hysteria bordering on neurosis due to them. In spite of these troubles, their father Mu-hyun (KIM Kap-soo) is strangely unconcerned. And then, a dark and gruesome secret about two sisters gets out.
A Tale Of Two Sisters (2003) was the beginning of change of KIM Jee-woon’s filmography, although The Quiet Family (1998) and The Foul King (2000) had confirmed him as a comedy director. KIM tried to make a change for the first time when he directed Memories segment in the omnibus film Three (2002), the Korean-Hong Kong-Thai project, and finally A Tale Of Two Sisters came out.
Also, KIM Jee-woon’s stateless space stands out in A Tale Of Two Sisters. His features like European furniture, floral wallpaper, Victorian style costumes for girls and Japanese wooden house seem to overshadow that the film is based on an old Korean tale. In fact, the film is not so closely related to the original story. It is because the film is a horror based on two sisters’ sense of guilt, not on their grudge after they were wrongly killed in the original story.
Unique films like Old Boy, Save the Green Planet and Memories Of Murder as well as A Tale Of Two Sisters were released in 2003. It was rarely full of charm and character, and those days have never returned. A Tale Of Two Sisters is one of the fruits in that very special year. Meanwhile, the film was remade into The Uninvited in Hollywood in 2009.
