Born in 1965, Kwon Haehyo studied acting at Hanyang University in the second half of the 1980s. He debuted as a stage actor in 1990 in a Korean production of Bertolt Brecht’s <The Good Person of Szechwan>, before graduating in 1992. Quickly thereafter, he began to appear on both the small and silver screens, mainly in comedies, with a first film role in <Myong-Ja Akiko Sonia> (1992). His first leading role came in 1996 with <The Real Man>. He made his name appearing in the sitcom <Guys n Girls> (1996-1999), and literally so since his character, a café owner named after his real name, would often make puns around it. His presence on the silver screen became rare in the 2000s, but he remained very active on television. Since <In Another Country> (2011), he has been a regular of Hong Sangsoo’s films, even getting top billing for <The Day After> (2017) and <Hotel by the River> (2018), with the former earning him a Best Actor Award from the Busan Film Critics Association. He was next seen in the feel-good family comedy <Inseparable Bros> (2018) before starring in the indie favorite <Maggie> (2018). He has been in high demand since then, appearing as often in arthouse films like <Juror 8> (2019) and Zhang Lu’s<FUKUOKA> (2019) as in highly anticipated blockbusters such as <Tazza: One Eyed Jack> (2019), <Peninsula> (2020) and The Cursed: Dead Man’s Prey> (2021).
