Studio Canal Options French Remake of CHEER UP, MR. LEE

Chuseok Family Comedy-Drama with CHA Seung-won to Be Adapted Overseas


The recent Chuseok family-oriented title CHEER UP, MR. LEE has been optioned for a French remake.

A deal for the adaptation was recently struck by the film’s local producer Yong Film and the major French outfit Studio Canal. CHEER UP, MR. LEE was co-produced by Along with the Gods creator Dexter Studios and distributed by Next Entertainment World, the company behind TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016).

LEE stars CHA Seung-won (Believer, 2018) as a mentally challenged man with a robust physique who learns that he has a daughter with a terminal illness. He soon finds himself on an impromptu journey with the girl while the rest of their family tries to track the pair down.

CHEER UP, MR. LEE was one of this year’s three major Chuseok holiday titles, all released on September 11, along with the crime-action hit The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos and the card shark threequel Tazza: One Eyed Jack. The film welcomed 1.17 million viewers (USD 8.2 million) to theatres after three weeks on release.

In a statement, producer Georgetta CURAVALE-IZARN of Studio Canal explained that “We decided to make a French-language version of ‘CHEER UP, MR. LEE’ as we believed that the film’s heartwarming sense of humor and emotional impression can be equally loved by the French audiences.”
