THE DAY AFTER Scores Asian Film Awards Nods for Film, Director and Actress

ANARCHIST FROM COLONY & ALONG WITH THE GODS also Triple Nominees at AFAs



Hong Sangsoo’s The Day After (2017), LEE Joon-ik’s Anarchist from Colony (2017) and KIM Yong-hwa’s Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017) have all received a trio of nominations for the upcoming 12th Asian Film Awards, which will take place in Macao on March 17th.

The Day After, which debuted in competition at Cannes and was one of three Hong films last year (along with On the Beach at Night Alone and Claire’s Camera), is nominated for Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress, for lead KIM Min-hee.

Set during Japan’s colonial rule of Korea, Anarchist from Colony secured nominations for Best Supporting Actress (CHOI Hee-seo), Best Screenplay (HWANG Seong-gu) and Best Costume Design (SHIM Hyun-seop).

Fantasy epic Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds, which recently became the third most successful Korean film of all time, is up for Best Action Film, Best Visual Effects and Best Production Design (LEE Mok-won).

Also scoring multiple nominations were HWANG Dong-hyuk’s period siege drama The Fortress (2017) and JANG Hun’s Gwangju Democratization Movement drama A Taxi Driver (2017). The Fortress picked up nods for Best Cinematography (KIM Jee-yong) and Best Sound (CHOI Tae-young), while A Taxi Driver is included in the nominees for Best Supporting Actor (YOO Hae-jin) and Best Music (CHO Young-wuk).

Receiving single nominations were JANG Joon-hwan’s political drama 1987: When the Day Comes (2017), with a Best Actor nod for KIM Yun-seok, KIM Sung-hoon’s North Korean action drama Confidential Assignment (2017), featured in the Best Newcomer category with Yoon-a, and HAN Jae-rim’s prosecutor saga The King (2017), which is up for Best Editing (SHIN Min-kyung).

At last year’s AFAs, Korean films won in six categories, including for Best Director, which went to NA Hong-jin for THE WAILING (2016).
