- TERMINATOR: DARK FATE Shoots Up Solid Debut in Korea

An ageing Hollywood franchise marched into the marketplace, lifting admissions some 20% to 2.16 million entries, which also pushed down the local market share to 34%, with no new major Korean films debuting over the weekend.While Terminator: Dark Fate struggled in its American and Chinese debuts over the weekend, the sixth entry in the long-running franchise had a healthy debut in Korea, where it handily topped the charts with 938,000 viewers (USD 7.15 million) over the weekend. The sci-fi action sequel has sold 1.37 million tickets (USD 9.74 million) since Wednesday and should maintain a reasonable sales rate going forward after receiving generally positive notices from audiences and critics.Down a scant 18% during its sophomore frame was the hit local drama KIM JI-YOUNG, BORN 1982, which secured another 682,000 entries (USD 5.1 million) to push its total to a very strong 2.5 million admissions (USD 17.65 million) after just 12 days. Prospects continue to look strong for the drama going forward with word of mouth continuing to build and little in the way of direct competition to slow it down.Weathering with You, the new animation from the hit Japanese filmmaker SHINKAI Makoto, known for the smash hit Your Name, had a decent start with 206,000 sales (USD 1.51 million) recorded over the weekend, and 337,000 seats (USD 2.35 million) filled over its first five days.Closing out the top five were the Hollywood holdovers Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Joker, which were both down 62%. In its third weekend, the Disney title sold 124,000 tickets (USD 894,000), raising its haul to 1.36 million admission (USD 9.91 million), while the DC Comics film welcomed 91,000 visitors (USD 684,000) during its fifth weekend, bringing its total to 5.16 million entries (USD 38.35 million).KIM JI-YOUNG, BORN 1982 is once again topping the reservations chart early in the week and could easily beat the second frame for Terminator: Dark Fate. However, some competition will arise from the local action-thriller sequel The Divine Move 2: The Wrathful.
