  • by JANG Sung-ran /  Nov 22, 2012
  • Audience for Korean Films Reaches 100 Million

The overall number of cinema-goers for Korean films this year surpassed 100 million on November 20th. The Korean Film Council announced that the Korean film industry has broken the barrier of 100 million spectators for Korean films for the very first time.

According to the Theater Admissions Overall Data System, the number of people who had seen Korean films reached 99,806,740 on November 19th with 190,000 watching Korean films during that day. At 3 o'clock on the 20th, the number went past the 99,900,000 mark. With more people watching Korean films in the evening of the same day, the figure rose to 100,010,154 by midnight, making it a record that no previous year has reached.

The former record was 97,913,570, which was set in 2006. Ten years since 50,820,000 people watched Korean films and 54,310,000 audience members saw foreign films in 2002, the Korean film industry has broken the 100 million mark for Korean films.

This year The Thieves and Masquerade each drew more than 10 million which helped to raise the figures. Thanks to the continuing popularity of Korean films, the average daily audience figure for Korean films is currently over 200,000 and the market share of Korean films is also on the rise. The highest point for the market share of Korean cinema this month was 73.3% and the overall market share this year so far is 59%, a rise of 7.1% from 51.9% last year.
