  • Top Honors for HILL OF FREEDOM at 34th Korean Film Critics Association Awards

  • CHOI Min-sik and CHUN Woo-hee Take Home Acting Prizes 
     

    Winners for the 34th Korean Film Critics Association Awards, which will be held on November 13th in Seoul’s Art Nine theater, were announced on November 3rd. HONG Sang-soo’s Hill of Freedom was revealed as the winner of the Best Film Award. CHOI Min-shik received Best Actor for playing Admiral LEE Sun-shin in Roaring Currents, which recently became the most successful Korean film of all time, and CHUN Woo-hee was awarded Best Actress for her part in the breakout indie Han Gong-ju. Meanwhile, Gyeongju’s ZHANG Lu picked up the Best Director accolade.
     
    One of the biggest prizes of the night, the Lifetime Achievement Award, went to legendary director of photography JUNG Il-sung. Known for his long collaboration with director IM Kwon-taek, which yielded such classics as Mandara (1981), Sopyonje (1993) and Chunhyang (2000), JUNG also shot such notable Korean films as KIM Ki-young’s Woman of Fire (1971), HA Gil-jong’s March of Fools (1975) and KIM Soo-yong’s Splendid Outing (1978). His last work was IM’s Beyond the Years (2006).
     
    Han Gong-ju, Roaring Currents, The Attorney, Kundo: Age of the Rampant and Obsessed each picked up a pair of awards, while the rest of the prizes were spread out among different films. The supporting actor awards went to KWAK Do-won for his role in The Attorney and Obsessed’s JO Yeo-jeong. LEE Su-jin’s script for Han Gong-ju was recognized, as was JANG Choon-seob’s art direction on Roaring Currents. Kundo: Age of the Rampant’s technical merits earned it prizes for CHOI Chan-min (Best Cinematography) and JO Yeong-wook (Best Music).
     
    The Attorney also won for Best New Director (YANG Woo-suk), while the new actor prizes went to Haemoo’s PARK Yoon-chun and Obsessed’s LIM Ji-yeon. Director KIM Kyung-Mook picked up the Independent Film Award for Futureless Things and YEON Sang-ho received the International Film Critics Federation of Korea Awards for his animation The Fake. The Rookie Film Critic award went to SONG A-reum.
