  • Director Park Chanwook’s Oldboy, Re-release in North America
  • by Park Hyejin /  Sep 07, 2022

  •

Neon, a North American distributor, obtained the North American distribution rights for Director Park Chanwook's Oldboy and will screen it at the North American theaters to mark the 20th anniversary of the film's release in Korea. Oldboy was released in Korea on November 21, 2003, and Neon has yet to reveal a specific date for its rerun in America.

Along with director Park Chanwook, Oldboy was written by Hwang Joyun of Masquerade and Im Joonhyung of ASHFALL and drew attention from the world's film industry, receiving the Grand Prix at the Festival de Cannes 2004. Quentin Tarantino was the head of the jury at the time.

Oldboy is well known overseas as ‘The Vengeance Trilogy’ directed by Park Chanwook along with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. Also, Oldboy was remade in Hollywood by Director Spike Lee in 2013.

Oldboy was released in a limited number of theaters in North America in 2005. At that time, the local income was $707,000 (about 971.06 million won). 『Variety』 introduced the film as a “rough and intense cinematic journey,” while film critic Derek Ellie called it “a David Lynch-style film that is difficult to interpret in Hollywood, which is gradually changing into a conservative environment.”

Neon, in charge of distributing the film to North America, has distributed the Palme d'Or at Cannes for three consecutive years, from Bong Joonho's PARASITE, Julia Ducournau’s Titane to Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness.
