  • The Remake of My Sassy Girl Released, a K-movie Remake Craze in Indonesia
  • by Park Hyejin /  Jun 27, 2022

  •

Korea's leading romantic comedy film My Sassy Girl was remade in Indonesia and released on June 23 (local time). ‘The girl,’ Gianna Jun played, was played by Tiara Andini, a famous idol singer in Indonesia, and Indonesian youth actor Jefri Nichol played the character Actor Cha Taehyun played in the Korean version. My Sassy Girl has been remade several times overseas, including in the United States, China, Japan, and Vietnam.

Released in 2001, My Sassy Girl depicts the pleasant love story of a pretty girl, whose unpredictable actions are lovely, and a man named ‘Gyeonwoo,’ who has fallen in love with ‘her.’ The film was ranked third at the box office hit that year, attracting about 4.88 million viewers when it was released in Korea in 2001. It was exported across Asia, including Japan, China, and Taiwan, and became especially popular in China, writing a new history of Korean romantic comedy.

In the second half of the year, the Indonesian films that remade Korean movies will be released. First of all, the remake of Miracle in Cell No. 7, which was released in Korea in 2013 and attracted 12 million viewers, will be released in September. Also, the remake of Hello Ghost, which was released in 2010 and Cha Taehyun starred in, will be released in October.

Previously, Korean film remakes were steadily released in Indonesia. In 2017, the Indonesian version of Sweet 20, the remake of Miss Granny, was released, ranking 11th at the Indonesian box office that year. In 2019, Sunyi, the remake of Whispering Corridors, and Bebas, the remake of Sunny also met Indonesian audiences.
