Hit Korean Studio Partners with New Local SVOD Provider

51 hit films from studio Showbox will be made available on the new Korean streaming service Coupang Play this month.

Coupang Play, which was launched by the Korean E-commerce company Coupang, is the latest streaming service to enter an increasingly busy marketplace in the country, which already includes Netflix and the local streaming services Watcha, Waave and Tving, while other services such as Disney+ are also expected to enter the market soon.

The service launched in December last year and is currently available on app stores for Android and iOS devices, with tablet, TV and computer versions expected to follow shortly. A monthly subscription to Coupang Play costs USD 2,900 won (USD 2.60) and can be used by up to five people.

Streaming services have seen their usage increase dramatically in Korea recently, especially as viewers have been dealing with social distancing restrictions during a pandemic which has dampened theatrical admissions and kept viewers at home eager for new ways to watch content.

Among the 51-strong Showbox library will be some of the studio most representative hits, such as the heist smash The Thieves (2012), gangland drama Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time (2012), period drama The Face Reader (2013), Cannes-invited thriller A Hard Day (2014), political crime-thriller Inside Men (2015) and the war film The Battle: Roar to Victory (2019).
