  • Documentary on IM Kwon-taek Seeks Crowdfunding Support
  • by Pierce Conran /  Feb 22, 2017
  • 3rd Feature by Film Critic JUNG Sung-il

Noted Korean film critic JUNG Sung-il, who debuted as a filmmaker in 2009 with Cafe Noir, is currently raising funds to complete post-production of his third work, The IM Kwon-taek Project, a documentary on legendary Korean filmmaker IM Kwon-taek which was largely filmed when IM shot his 102nd feature Revivre (2014).

The filmmaker is seeking KRW 20 million (USD 17,500) on the crowdfunding site Wadiz to complete the post-production costs of The IM Kwon-taek Project, which has filmed in several chunks from 2012 to 2014. The film is expected to be released in the second half of 2017.

JUNG first interviewed Director IM in the mid-1980s and has written about him extensively, also being present for most of the filming of his 2002’s work Chihwaseon, which earned IM the Best Director Prize for the Cannes Film Festival.

His first film Cafe Noir, a narrative black and white project starring SHIN Ha-kyun and MOON Jeong-hee that clocked in at an unusually long 197 minutes for a Korean film, was a critically acclaimed work that debuted at the Venice International Film Festival. His next work was Night and Fog In Zona (2015), a documentary on the work of Chinese non-fiction filmmaker WANG Bin, which debuted in the New Currents section of the Busan International Film Festival.
