The Korean Film Council (KOFIC, Chairperson Han Sang-jun) successfully held the “Gachibom Generations Together Special Screening” on the evening of Tuesday, September 22, at CGV Yeouido, where people with and without disabilities, as well as young people and seniors, watched a film together.

Organized ahead of Chuseok, Korea’s major national holiday, the event was designed to spread the meaning of “barrier-free cultural togetherness,” in which people with and without disabilities watch films together and younger and older generations share the common experience of cinema. National Assembly member Kim Seung-soo and key figures from the film industry and related organizations attended the screening.

The featured film was The Intern, a story about people who move beyond differences in generation and age to understand each other’s lives and build relationships. It was presented in a Gachibom version with Korean closed captions (CC), produced in cooperation with the Korea Association of the Deaf, allowing audience members with and without disabilities to laugh, empathize, and share the film’s emotional impact together in the same space.

The event was made possible through the cooperation of various organizations, including film industry partners such as investor-distributor Warner Bros. Korea and production company Anthology Studios, as well as organizations for people with disabilities. Public-interest content was also produced to promote the purpose and achievements of the Project to Improve the Film-Viewing Environment for People with Disabilities, which is funded by the Lottery Fund.

Chairperson Han Sang-jun said, “Ensuring that every audience member who loves film can watch the same work without barriers, and laugh and cry at the same moments, is an important task the film industry must work on together.” He added, “KOFIC will continue to do its utmost to expand the production and screening infrastructure for Gachibom films and to create a viewing environment where everyone can enjoy films together.”

Attendees shared what it meant to enjoy a film together through the Gachibom screening. One visually impaired audience member said, “It felt like the cultural distance I had felt because of my disability disappeared,” adding, “I could truly feel connected with people without disabilities, young people, and seniors.” Another audience member with a hearing impairment said, “I hope more theaters will offer Korean-captioned screenings on a regular basis, creating an environment where we can comfortably enjoy cultural life anytime.”

Building on this special screening, KOFIC plans to continue its efforts to expand film accessibility for people with disabilities and to foster a cultural environment where people with and without disabilities, as well as young people and seniors, can enjoy films together.
