- Independent Cinema Beyond the Theater: Community Screenings and Youth Film Education Open New Pathways
- by KoBiz / Mar 11, 2026

Indieground — established by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC, Chair Han Sang-jun) to improve the distribution and circulation environment for Korean independent and art-house cinema — is expanding its free support programs for community screenings and educational screenings of independent films.
Indieground has long championed "community screenings", an alternative cultural practice in which audiences take the lead in organizing their own film events and building direct dialogue with filmmakers. Last year alone, the organization partnered with 81 groups nationwide, facilitating 196 screenings and 25 director-attendance events, reaching approximately 2,000 audience members. Of particular note, the initiative found strong resonance in regions with historically limited access to independent cinema — including Busan, Gangwon Province, and Mokpo — transforming cafés, bookstores, and community halls into genuine cinematic spaces.
This year, Indieground is continuing that support through its 2025 Independent Film Library, a curated slate of 92 titles (23 features, 69 shorts) selected for community screening eligibility. The lineup includes works that have earned both critical and audience recognition at major domestic and international festivals: The Final Semester (dir. Lee Ran-hee), Rotary's Hanchul (dir. Kim So-yeon), and Glasses (dir. Jung Yu-mi), alongside films that give voice to diverse social experiences — including memory, documentation, women's lives, and queer identities — such as K Number (dir. Jo Se-young), Yangyang (dir. Yang Ju-yeon), and Sayonara, I Love You, Sayonara (dir. Hong Seon-hye). In addition to screenings, the program includes Director Invitation support, enabling communities to engage directly with the filmmakers behind each work.
The program is open to all individuals and organizations who wish to gather around independent film — audiences, activists, community groups, and cultural collectives alike. Applications are accepted through Saturday, October 31 via the Indieground website (www.indieground.kr).
Indieground is also continuing its Youth Recommended Independent Films screening initiative, designed to help young audiences encounter the world through independent cinema. The program aims to activate film-based arts and culture education in schools and diverse educational settings, while cultivating future audiences.
For 2025, ten titles (1 feature, 9 shorts) have been selected from the 2024 Independent Film Library as Youth Recommended Independent Films, chosen for their high educational and social value. The selection spans a range of themes that resonate deeply with young audiences — family, dreams, history, solidarity, and youth labor — and all titles are made available for online screening to ensure immediate, practical use in educational settings. Screening applications and individual title information are available on the Indieground website (www.indieground.kr).
