HANSAN: RISING DRAGON, Topped the Weekend Box Office of Its Release

Alienoid Part 1, Stepped Down to 4th, Surpassing 1.3 Million Audiences in Total

 

 

 

The second episode of Director Kim Hanmin's ‘Yi Sunsin Trilogy’, HANSAN: RISING DRAGON, was released on July 27 and topped the box office on its 1st weekend. According to the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), HANSAN: RISING DRAGON attracted 1,632,083 audiences over the weekend (July 29~31), recording 60.4 % of the sales share. The weekend sales of the film are USD 13 million. It is an overwhelming hit in the last week of July. 

 

Director Kim Hanmin of The Admiral: ROARING CURRENTS (2014), who set the best box office hit record in Korean film history, has returned with ‘Admiral Yi Sunsin’ in the summer of 2022. HANSAN: RISING DRAGON, depicts the Battle of Hansan, where Admiral Yi won an ‘overwhelming victory’ off Hansan Island in 1592, which is 5 years before the Battle of Myeongnyang, and Actor Park Haeil played Admiral Yi Sunsin.

 

DreamWorks' Minions: The Rise of Gru, kept in 2nd place. Its weekend audience is 340,450, recording 11.7 % of the sales share. The total audience of Minions: The Rise of Gru is 1,505,018. It can be analyzed that family audiences continued to visit the theater during the summer vacation period.

 

Top Gun: Maverick recorded 296,675 weekend audiences with 11.1% of sales, ranked 3rd place. In the 6th week of its release, it still has box office power with a total audience of 7,049,397.

 

Alienoid Part 1, which marks its second week of release, fell 3 steps to 4th place this weekend with 187,548 viewers with 7% of sales. So far, the total number of audiences is 1,357,697, and the break-even point is known to be around 7 million audiences of the fantasy SF blockbuster with a net production cost of 33 billion won. Meanwhile, Director Park Chanwook's Decision to Leave, which has been receiving favorable reviews due to a series of audience re-watching, surpassed 1.67 million viewers in total, maintaining 6th place at the box office.

 

Animations for children's audiences are showing good box office results during the summer vacation. The Korean animation, Pororo Movie: Dragon Castle Adventure, released on July 28, was ranked 5th with 129,399 weekend audiences, and the long-time Japanese franchise, Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween, was ranked 7th at the box office with 30,005 weekend audiences.

 

The heated competition among 4 Korean films will continue this week. Director Han Jaerim's Emergency Declaration was ranked 9th in sales through the preview ahead of its release on August 3.
