The First ‘10-Million Viewer Film’ Was Born in 3 years after the Pandemic
The Roundup topped the box office for 4 consecutive weekends, marking the first ‘10-million viewer film’ in 3 years among the Korean films released during the Pandemic era. According to the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) on June 13 (Monday), The Roundup recorded 817,031 viewers from June 10 to 12. The weekend sales accounted for 6.7 million USD with 45.5% of sales. In addition, its total audience exceeded 10 million on June 11, the 25th day of its release. It’s the birth of the first ‘10-million viewer film’ in 3 years since the COVID-19 Pandemic broke out. The total audience of The Roundup is 10,503,880 by June 12, marking the 28th ‘10-million viewer film’ among the movies released in Korea.
Released on June 8, Broker ranked second with 515,370 viewers on the first weekend of its release. Drawing attention as Actor Song Kangho won the Best Actor at the 75th Festival de Cannes, Broker recorded 773,363 audiences in total by June 12, raising the possibility of surpassing 1 million viewers. Currently, its record is the highest in the Korean box office performance among Director Kore-eda Hirokazu’s films released in Korea. Previously, the most popular film in Korea among Director Kore-eda’s films was Shoplifters (2018), which won the Palme d’Or at Festival de Cannes. The film recorded 170,000 audiences in total.
Jurassic World: Dominion, the finale of the Jurassic Park series, which began in 1993, ranked 3rd place, falling one step down compared to the previous week. The weekend audience was 316,162, and its total audience is 2,618,867 by June 12. Considering the early box office speed, it shows a sharp downturn.
4th place is the Japanese animation Pokemon the Movie: Giratina and the Sky Warrior, which was released on June 1, gathering 121,225 viewers over the weekend. 5th place is the Korean documentary The Red Herring with 12,875 audiences over the weekend, recording more than 310,000 viewers in total.
Also, Top Gun: Maverick, the first sequel to Top Gun in 36 years, which is set to be released on June 22, was ranked 7th in the weekend box office with 5,500 audiences only on the prerelease.
