LA LA LAND Tops Charts for Second Time Amid Covid-19 Rerelease

THE AVENGERS Return to Charts, AFTER THE WEDDING Debuts in 5th

Business was flat with last week at the Korean box office but up just over 15% from its record low two weeks ago as exhibitors begin to hope viewers are gradually returning to cinemas. Only 116,000 tickets were sold, a large percentage of that going to repertory titles, while domestic fare claimed 14% of sales.

Despite never placing higher than second place when it was originally released at the end of 2016, the musical hit La La Land is now coming off of its second chart-topping weekend during its Covid-19 rerelease. The film brought in 16,528 viewers (USD 69,180), up 10% from last week, which brought its lifetime total to 3.69 million admissions.

Still in second place and up 7%, having been on release for over two months, was the World War I drama 1917. The Sam MENDES film added 15,647 entries (USD 112,530), pushing its haul to 809,000 sales (USD 5.97 million).

Meanwhile, the Marvel hits The Avengers (2012) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) landed in the third and fourth, respectively, with 7,037 (USD 35,610) and 5,667 (USD 28,000) new sales. The lifetime hauls of the box office giants stand at 7.08 and 10.5 million admissions.

The highest performing new release was the US drama After the Wedding with Julianne MOORE and Michelle WILLIAMS, a remake of the 2006 Danish film of the same name. The film managed to fill 5,463 seats (USD 38,220) over the weekend, with 6,806 viewers (USD 46,810) counted over its first four days.

The local indie period drama Over that Mountain (translated title) is currently topping the reservation charts and stands a chance of becoming the first Korean film to top the box office in over two months. However, it will face competition from some heavyweight rep titles, as Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and the black and white version of PARASITE (2019) are also poised to attract crowds.
