Director calls upcoming genre debut his most brutal film yet, backed by an independently financed package that sold at Cannes

Park Chan-wook has described his next film as the most violent work of his career. Speaking on August 29 at Seoul Art Cinema, during a special screening marking the 20th anniversary of "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK," the director said the project contains more brutal scenes than anything he has made. He added that it is also a film about guilt and love.

The film in question is "The Brigands of Rattlecreek," Park's first English-language feature since "Stoker" in 2013 and his first Western. The declaration signals a deliberate reversal. Park's two most recent films, "Decision to Leave" and "No Other Choice," both carried Korea's 15-and-over rating, a restrained register by his standards. He now appears to be returning to the intensity that defined "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," "Oldboy" and "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance."

The story follows a sheriff and a doctor who pursue a gang of bandits after the group uses the cover of a torrential thunderstorm to rob and terrorize a small town in the American West. S. Craig Zahler, writer of "Bone Tomahawk," wrote the original screenplay, which Park revised himself.

The cast is unusually deep. Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler and Pedro Pascal are attached, alongside Tang Wei, who worked with Park on "Decision to Leave." In late August, French actress Adele Exarchopoulos joined in a substantial role as the wife of Butler's character. Exarchopoulos drew international attention with "Blue Is the Warmest Colour," which won the Palme d'Or at the 66th Cannes Film Festival.

Park produces through his Moho Film banner with Bradley Fischer, producer of "Zodiac." The financing route is the more notable detail. Rather than being developed inside a studio, the project was assembled independently and brought to the Cannes market in May as a package. Clockwork, the specialty label Warner Bros. launched in late 2025, acquired North American distribution rights in a deal reported in the mid-teen millions. International sales are handled by 193, the label led by Patrick Wachsberger. The total budget stands at roughly $60 million, an unprecedented scale for a Hollywood project driven by a Korean director. Production is scheduled to begin in early 2027.

"The Brigands of Rattlecreek" has spent close to two decades in development. Zahler's screenplay landed on the Black List in 2006 and cycled through several attempts to reach production before stalling. The project Park has held onto for years is finally moving toward camera.

What matters here is less the level of violence than the production structure that permits it. This is not a studio development deal in which a distributor shapes the project from inception. It is a package built around a director and cast, sold on the open market, with distribution attached afterward. That structure lets Park operate a $60 million budget while retaining creative control, and it explains how he can publicly promise his most violent film to date without hedging.

A shift in awards strategy is also visible. "No Other Choice" reached the 15-title shortlist for best international feature at the 98th Academy Awards but missed the final five nominees. That came after three Golden Globe nominations and a North American gross above $7 million, the second highest for a Korean film in the US market. With the international feature category repeatedly closing off, Park has chosen to enter the American mainstream directly, through English-language stars and one of the most recognizably American genres there is.

The year has been a symbolic one for the director. In May, he became the first Korean to serve as jury president of the Cannes Film Festival competition. Having sat in judgment at the center of world cinema, he now moves immediately into directing a Hollywood genre picture. Taken together, the sequence suggests that overseas activity by Korean auteurs is moving past one-off invitations and remake rights sales, toward a stage in which directors design their own financing and distribution architecture.
