Busan Joins the A-List: FIAPF's Top Tier
From "Competitive Specialised" to "A-List": BIFF Reaches a New Milestone After Three Decades

The Busan International Film Festival has
officially joined the ranks of Cannes, Berlin, and Venice. In March 2026, the
International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) designated BIFF
as an "A-List" festival under its newly introduced certification
framework — making it the only Korean film festival to receive the top-tier
designation, granted to just 17 of the 49 FIAPF-accredited festivals worldwide.
The Data Behind BIFF's Recognition
The recognition comes amid a sweeping overhaul of FIAPF's
classification system. The federation has retired its longstanding practice of
categorizing festivals based solely on whether they hold a competition section.
In its place, FIAPF has introduced a new evaluation framework assessing two
years of data across four criteria: programming capability, industry-related
activities, media and publicity impact, and audience reach. The reform marks
the most significant restructuring of the system in approximately 20 years.
Under the previous framework, BIFF had been classified in the
"Competitive Specialised" category — structurally distinct from the
top tier occupied by fully competitive festivals such as Cannes and Venice.
Despite its standing as Asia's largest film festival, BIFF was institutionally
categorized at a different level than its actual influence warranted. Its
elevation to "A-List" status represents a formal acknowledgment of
the credibility and capacity BIFF has built over the past 30 years.
The Road Ahead After A-List Recognition
Founded in 1996, FIAPF-accredited the following year, admitted to
the Film Festival Council in 2018, introducing a competition section in 2025,
and now earning A-List designation in 2026 — BIFF's three-decade trajectory is
a story of growth from a platform for discovering emerging Asian filmmakers to
a globally influential A-list festival.
That said, A-List status does not equate to equal industry weight
across all festivals on the list. Just as it took decades for the Palme d'Or to
carry the kind of authority that directly shapes international distribution and
box office performance, it will take time for BIFF's awards to confer
comparable market value.
Ultimately, BIFF must grow from a festival that introduces
Asian cinema into one that defines it — capable of leading substantive
discourse on which Asian films deserve attention and where Asian cinema is
heading. When that happens, the achievement of A-List recognition will take on
an entirely new significance.
