The second mainstream Korean release to hit theaters in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Innocence is an engrossing new courtroom drama with TV star SHIN Hye-sun in her first leading film role. The film is the feature directing debut of Big Match (2014) producer PARK Sang-hyun and also marks the entry of Sony Pictures into Korean-language film production and distribution.
Based on a true-life tale, Innocence follows the ambitious young lawyer Ahn Jung-in (SHIN Hye-sun), who grew up in the countryside and now works for a powerful law firm in the big city. She’s drawn back to her hometown when her mother (BAE Jong-ok), who suffers from dementia, is accused of poisoning guests at her husband’s funeral, including the town’s mayor (HUH Joon-ho).
Jung-in returns to her mother’s side and soon discovers inconsistencies in the case. As she reaches further down the rabbit hole she begins to unearth various shady dealings during her investigation, while representing her mother in court at the same time.
SHIN had supporting roles in films such as the thriller A Day (2017) before finding a larger fanbase through successful TV drama roles. BAE is a veteran actress recently seen in the indie drama In Between Seasons (2018), who aged up for her role as Jung-in’s mother, while HUH is a well-known character actor, recently seen in Default (2018), Forbidden Dream (2019) and the Netflix series Kingdom.
Innocence was originally slated for a March launch, which was twice delayed due to the public health crisis, until eventually settling on June 10. The film has done well on wide release, despite depressed crowds, with over 700,000 admissions recorded to date.
