Less than a year after his brooding North Korea-themed serial killer thriller V.I.P. (2017), director PARK Hoon-jung is back in theaters with another genre-bending opus. Featuring new star KIM Da-mi, The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion is looking at kick-starting a female-led action franchise this summer.

KIM plays Ja-yoon, a teenager who lives a peaceful life in the countryside with the couple that adopted her. When she was young, Ja-yoon escaped from an experimental government facility though she has no memory of her past, but once she takes part in a national singing contest, egged on by her friend, dark figures from her past begin to circle around her.

CHO Min-soo of Pieta (2012) plays the head of the facility still trying to track down Ja-yoon while both PARK Hee-soon, who featured in V.I.P., and CHOI Woo-shik of Okja (2017) feature as her subordinates. In addition to V.I.P., director PARK is known for helming gangland drama New World (2013) and penning the scripts to RYOO Seung-wan’s The Unjust (2010) and KIM Jee-woon’s I Saw the Devil (2010).

Foreign viewers will get a chance to see The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion before long, starting with Korean film fans in Montreal, who can check out the film during its international premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in July.
