In June 1950, Jin-tae (JANG Dong-gun) is poor but works hard for his smart younger brother Jin-suk (WON Bin) and his fiancée Young-shin (LEE Eun-ju) in hopes of better future. But when the Korean War begins and lines of refugees head south, two brothers get involved in a great tragedy. Jin-suk is forcibly conscripted into the war at the train station, and Jin-tae is also drafted to save his brother.

The Nakdong River battle line is one of the fiercest battles of Korean War where the two brothers are committed. Jin-tae puts himself at many dangerous missions because he believes his commanding officer’s promise that if he accomplishes a high feat, his brother can be sent home. However, Jin-suk feels fear his brother becoming a cold-blood ruthless killer. When South Korean troops start to advance to the north, destiny waits for the two setting another trap.

Director KANG Je-kyu has rewritten the history of Korean blockbusters with Swiri (1999). He directed TaeGukGi: Brotherhood Of War (2004) five years after Swiri with an ambition to make the best local movie at that time. The film’s production cost was USD 12.8 million while it used 25,000 extras and actual size steam train and tanks. Moreover, the best staff such as HONG Kyeong-pyo (Director of Photography), JUNG Doo-hong (Action/Stunt), JUNG Do-ahn (Special Effect) and KIM Suk-won (Sound) joined the project.

However, such a big movie shows tragedy of war which destroys ordinary people’s lives, not spectacular battle scenes. The South and North fought in a small peninsula. The battle lines changed so many times that a region became a part of North Korea and then that of South again. It was common that brothers, families and neighbors turned their backs and accused each other. TaeGukGi: Brotherhood Of War is a huge spectacle showing the cruelty and tragedy of Korean War.
