Jang Gyeong-ho (Seong So-min) visits fellow student Kim Dong-hwan's (Lee Min) hometown, and falls in love with his sister, Ok-gyeong (Choi Eun-hee). Despite Dong-hwan's objections, Ok-gyeong follows Gyeong-ho to Seoul. With his help she finds a job at Dong-il where she works as a secretary for the president, Mr. Oh. Having passed the Higher Civil Service Examination, Gyeong-ho gets married to Ok-gyeong. But his mother, Mrs. Yun (Seok Geum-seong) and his sister, Myeong-hee (Kim Yu-hee) abuse Ok-gyoeng, because she comes from the countryside. They instead treat Park Jeong-ok (Do Geum-bong), a friend of Myeong-hee, as family. While Gyeong-ho is working abroad, Mrs. Yun and Myeong-hee make up a story that Ok-gyeong had sneaked a man into the house, and kick her out. Rejected by her brother, Ok-gyeong lives alone working as a kindergarten teacher. Years later she meets her son Young-cheol. Believing his grandmother and aunt, he tells his own mother that she is a bad woman. She is shocked by this and goes out of her mind. Dong-hwan takes her home. Returning from abroad, Gyeong-ho gets to know everything. He goes to Ok-gyeong with Myeong-hee, who repents her wrongdoing. Gyeong-ho holds Ok-gyeong, who is out of her mind, and collapses by the riverside. Myeong-hee begs her forgiveness in the heavy rain. On a clear day, Ok-gyeong, Gyeong-ho and Myeong-hee get on a train to Seoul with Ok-gyeong's crippled younger brother.
