“Enjoying Movies Together at the Busan Cinema Center”
Busan
Cinema Center is thelandmark of the film city of Busan. It is not only well known as the official,
exclusive venue of the Busan International Film Festival, but also for
its variety of cultural contents and programs and the impeccable beauty of its construction.
The Busan Cinema Center helps Busan to get closer to its dream of becoming a global
media cultural hub. In addition to this, it conducts its role as a media-culture
complex with a variety of cultural activities like exhibitions, performance
concerts and media education including its main theme, cinema.
The
City of Busan carried out the construction of the Busan Cinema Center for the following
objectives: to promote Busan International Film Festival as a world
class event; and furthermore, to promote Busan as a representative film city in
Asia by boosting the infrastructure of the media industry, which is considered
a power industry of the next generation. Therefore, it opened on September 29,
2011.
This
beautiful work of architecture is located in Centum City, Busan. The
construction is very unique with a deconstructive, atypical and irregular
structure. The center is made up of three buildings: Cine Mountain, Biff Hill,
and Double Cone; Biff Theater with the small roof; and Dureraum Square with the
large roof. These buildings are also connected with crossover bridges.
In
particular, the large roof is 163 meters long x 60 meters wide with a
cantilever portion and is supported by a double cone pillar. The large
roof is 1.5 times bigger than a football field, and at the same time is certified
by Guinness World Records as the longest cantilever roof. The ceilings of the large
and small roofs are clad with 23,910 and 18,690 LED lights respectively, so
that it allows for the creation of many different images and also creates a
great night view with neighboring places like Suyong River and APEC Naru Park.
The
center includes various facilities for films, performances, concerts
and other events: an outdoor theater, Biff Theater where its opening and
closing ceremonies take place, a large square under the large roof, the Hanuelyeon
Theatre which holds film screenings and performances, three theaters equipped
with the newest audio equipment and a pleasant atmosphere, and the Multipurpose
Hall.
Specifically,
the outdoor Biff Theater is the most popular theater during the Busan International
Film Festival. It is quite a special space: on the ceiling, the large roof with
an LED light system gives an impression of being inside, at the same time the
left and the right sides are open without walls. The Biff Theater has a capacity
of 4,000 seats, however during the festival, 1000 more seats are added to the
theater. An outdoor screening is held here at every night during the festival.
The screen size of the Cinemountain Wall at 24 meters by 13 meters makes it the
largest outdoor screen in Korea.
The Cinemountain, the main building of the Busan
Cinema Center, includes three theaters and one performance hall: the Haneulyeon
Theatre with a capacity of 841 seats, the Cinematheque with a capacity of 212
seats, Cinema l with a capacity of 423 seats, and Cinema ll with a capacity of
212 seats.
The
three theaters of the center screen classic, art and independent
films, which are rare in normal movie theaters. Not only the Busan
International Film Festival, but also other film festivals take place here:
Busan International Short Film Festival, Busan International Kids’ Film
Festival, the Independent Film Festival MADE IN BUSAN, the Barrier Free Film
Festival and various other film festivals (India Film Festival, French Film
Festival, Arab Film Festival and Sweden Film Festival) that introduce newly
released films from each of the abovementioned countries.
Biff
Hill is composed of the Multipurpose Hall on the first floor, the Library and Film
Archive on the second floor, and the Biff Organizing Committee office on the
third and fourth floors. On the underground floor, there is the Film Projection
Room with a capacity of 36 seats, and the Asia Film Archive with books and theses
on international films, film screenplays and catalogues from international film
festivals, all stored under a thermohygrostat system. In addition to this,
in a film hall in the corner, visitors can watch for free 3,907 VOD films
provided by the Korea Film Archive, and 10,000 of the films submitted to BIFF. In
addition, about 30 courses and workshops about film theory and practice are
held in the BIFF Academy.
The
center was designed by the Austrian architectural design firm Coop Himmelbau.
Many
film institutions are gathered in the Centum City Busan, where the Biff Center is
located. These include the Korean Film Council, the Korea Media Rating Board, the
Im Kwon-taek School of Film & Performing Arts on the Dongseo University
Centum City Campus, and several film post-production companies.
The Center has become a must-see for people in the
domestic and international architectural realm. The three-dimensional straight
and curved lines and atypical structure of the work was created at the highest
level of difficulty. The Center has brought to citizens the joy and diversity
of film and the media arts. Therefore, it is truly a landmark of the film city
Busan and of Asia.
