INNOCENCE Cuts ONWARD Short during 2nd Weekend Win
ME AND ME with CHO Jin-woong Debuts in 3rd
After reaching a record high of 507,000 admissions during the Covid-19 era last week, box office fell slightly to 489,000 sales over the past weekend, with 62% of those counted for local films.
Following its solid debut last weekend, the well-received Innocence was pushed down the charts by new entry ME AND ME on Thursday before coming back to reclaim the top spot on Saturday. With a 42% drop, the legal thriller recorded another 143,000 viewers (USD 1.09 million) over the weekend, bolstering its total to a healthy 558,000 admissions (USD 4.17 million) to date.
Originally released in foreign markets just ahead of the current global crisis, Pixar’s latest film Onward finally found its way to Korean theaters, where it had to settle for a second place debut. The film, featuring the voices of Marvel veterans Chris Pratt and Tom Holland, scored 119,000 sales (USD 905,000) over the weekend, with 158,000 tickets (USD 1.18 million) shifted since its Wednesday debut.
Well received by critics but less so by audiences, local mystery-drama ME AND ME, the directing debut of actor JUNG Jin-young starring CHO Jin-woong, lost steam after initially posting a first place debut. It fell to third place by the end of the weekend with a middling 110,000 entries (USD 840,000) during its debut, with 143,000 seats (USD 1.07 million) filled in four days.
Down 67% in its third frame was the mystery-thriller Intruder, the first major local release to be released during the Covid Pandemic. The film brought in another 27,000 spectators (USD 199,000), pushing its total to 516,000 admissions (USD 3.86 million).
Rerelease The Greatest Showman continued its run with another 16,000 entries (USD 80,000), lifting its lifetime sales to 1.66 million tickets (USD 10.8 million).
Innocence will have a hard time hanging on to the top spot with another major local release on the way, in the form of #ALIVE, a zombie horror film with big names YOO Ah-in and PARK Shin-hye. The film is posting solid numbers on the reservations chart as of early Monday and is well positioned to post the biggest debut since the pandemic struck Korea in late February.
