JOKER and CRAZY ROMANCE Continue to Laugh It Up

GEMINI MAN Opens a Distant 4th

With a lack of enticing new releases, holdovers claimed most of the top five as overall admissions slid around 35% to 1.68 million. Of those, 41% were snatched up by local titles, mostly in their second or third week in theaters.

Remaining in first place was the dark DC Comics origin story Joker, which lost just 41% of its opening weekend audience as it filled another 768,000 seats (USD 5.71 million). To date, the Warner Bros film has taken in an impressive 3.85 million spectators (USD 28.31 million).

Following its solid debut, strong word of mouth gave the local romcom Crazy Romance a very healthy 25% slide, as another 468,000 viewers (USD 3.46 million) snatched up tickets to the KONG Hyo-jin and KIM Rae-won vehicle. In 12 days, the film has scored a robust 2.05 million entries (USD 14.77 million).
Less fortunate was the local bromance Man of Men, which was off 48% from its soft debut, as it brought in 168,000 viewers (USD 1.23 million). The Showbox title is currently sitting on a 1.03 million admissions (USD 7.3 million) haul after 12 days.

Ang LEE’s latest film, the high concept SF-action Will SMITH vehicle Gemini Man, was a non-starter with a fourth-place debut of 165,000 sales (USD 1.22 million). Over five days, which included Wednesday’s Hangul Day, the film recorded 302,000 entries (USD 2.21 million).

Down another 75% in its third week was the Korean War action-drama Battle of Jangsari, as it added 25,000 viewers (USD 167,000), raising its total to 1.11 million admissions (USD 7.45 million).

This coming week will see the local romcom LOVE, AGAIN open against the Disney fantasy sequel Maleficent 2.
