NIGHT IN PARADISE to Debut at Venice International Film Festival

Director PARK Hoon-jung Makes Lido Debut with Out of Competition Invite

Though the Cannes Film Festival was forced to forgo staging an offline event this year, the Venice International Film Festival is set to return to the Lido in September and it will be bringing a new Korean film with it. Making his Venice debut will be Director PARK Hoon-jung, whose Night in Paradise (2019) will have its world premiere as an out of competition screening at the festival.

PARK’s film takes place on Jeju Island and features UM Tae-goo as a young man on the run from gangsters and a woman who is driven to the edge, played by JEON Yeo-been. Co-stars include CHA Seung-won (Believer, 2018), LEE Ki-young (The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion, 2018) and PARK Ho-san (Jukdo Surfing Diary).

UM Tae-goo has been a steady and growing presence in commercial films since Veteran (2015) and drew particular notice from his impressive turn as the villain in The Age of Shadows (2016). He also often appears in indie fare, such as My Punch-drunk Boxer (2019).

JEON Yeo-been is known for the indie After My Death (2018), a New Currents award winner at the Busan International Film Festival in 2017, and most recently appeared in the Lunar New Year comedy SECRET ZOO earlier this year.

Director PARK, who first came to the notice of cinephiles as the screenwriter of both RYOO Seung-wan’s The Unjust (2010) and KIM Jee-woon’s I Saw the Devil (2010), debuted as a filmmaker with The Showdown in 2011. But it was his 2013 gangland hit New World that cemented his status as a future leading light of the industry. He went on to make The Tiger (2015), V.I.P. (2017) and The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion (2018). Night in Paradise (2019) is his sixth film.

Night in Paradise (2019) is the first Korean feature to be invited to Venice since 2016, when both KIM Jee-woon’s The Age of Shadows (2016) and KIM Ki-duk’s THE NET (2016) screened out of competition. This year’s 77th edition of the Venice International Film Festival will take place between September 3 and 12.
