AMPAS Invites 19 New Korean Members

PARASITE Team and More Join Academy Awards Voting Body
 

Last week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which stages the Academy Awards annually, revealed a list of 819 new film professionals from 68 countries invited to join its ranks this year. Among the new Academy members, should they accept their invitations, were a record 19 Korean film professionals, the lion’s share having been involved in this year’s historic Best Picture winner PARASITE (2019).

Winner of four Academy Awards, including the first ever Best Picture Award for a foreign language film, PARASITE (2019) accounted for 12 of the new members, including actors PARK So-dam, CHOI Woo-shik, LEE Jung-eun, JANG Hye-jin and CHO Yeo-jeong, who all shared in the Best Ensemble Awards from the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) earlier this year, as well as producer KWAK Sin-ae, editor YANG Jin-mo, production designer LEE Ha-joon, co-writer HAN Jin-won, composer JUNG Jae-il, costume designer CHOI Se-yeon and Ralph Tae-young CHOI, who was in charge of sound. Director BONG Joon-ho, co-star SONG Kang-ho and director of photography HONG Kyeong-pyo are already Academy members.

Director YI Seung-Jun and producer Gary Byung-Seok KAM were also invited to join the Academy. YI and KAM were responsible for In the Absence (2018) which, along with PARASITE (2019), was the first Korean film to receive a nomination for an Academy Award, for this year’s Best Documentary (Short Subject) Award.

Additional new members also included A Moment To Remember (2004) and Operation Chromite (2016) director John H. LEE and Pieta (2012) and Rampant (2018) composer PARK In-young, as well as the LA-based animator LEE Hyun-min (Frozen), visual effects artist LEE Gong-myung (Deadpool 2) and casting director Julia KIM (Minari).
