  • THE SUICIDE SQUAD Fails to Take Out ESCAPE FROM MOGADISHU
  • by Pierce Conran /  Aug 10, 2021
  • Local Blockbusters Shut Out Hollywood in Summer Season

Local blockbusters continued to hold the foreign competition at bay during the summer holidays, as sales were down a slight 10% week-on-week. Out of a total of 895,000 admissions, the local market share stood at 57%, a figure that should rise further this coming week with the entry of another hot local title.

Ryoo Seungwan’s Escape from Mogadishu claimed the top spot again after a strong 14% hold kept it far above the competition. With 480,000 entries (USD 4.26 million) banked during its second weekend, the action-thriller has so far reached 1.71 million viewers (USD 14.47 million). Though big competition is on the way, strong word of mouth could carry the film to the best total at the Korean box office in 2021 within the next few weeks, which is currently held by Black Widow.

Opening in a distant second place was the DC Comics title The Suicide Squad. Despite strong reviews, the film opening with just 177,000 sales (USD 1.66 million) over the weekend, with a total of 281,000 tickets sold since its Wednesday (USD 2.57 million) debut.

In its third week, the animated sequel Boss Baby: Family Business was down 43%, adding 79,000 admissions (USD 640,000) to a total of 837,000 sales (USD 6.55 million) so far.

Marvel film Black Widow remained a presence after slowing 46% and filling 51,000 seats over the weekend (USD 465,000). The film’s 2.91 million admissions (USD 25.71 million) total is the best score of the year to date, but it may not hold on to the title for very long.

Opening in fifth place was the latest Doraemon the Movie, Nobita’s New Dinosaur. The Japanese animation debuted with 28,000 sales (USD 215,000) over the weekend and a total of 39,000 entries (USD 294,000) were recorded over its first four days.

Though Escape from Mogadishu is still going strong, local competitor Sinkhole, a disaster comedy from Showbox, is threatening to take over in pole position this coming weekend. Meanwhile, the US title Free Guy is also set to open.
