  • FAST & FURIOUS 9 Looks to Revive Industry this Coming Weekend

It was another quiet weekend at the box office as business remained flat at 304,000 admissions. With no major new domestic titles to entice viewers, the market for the local industry remained on the low side at 29%. However, admissions should shoot up, with the local market share consequently cratering, this coming weekend as theaters get ready to welcome one of the biggest titles of the pandemic.

Finding its way to first place was Spiral, the latest title in the American horror franchise Saw. The film opened with 61,000 admissions (USD 553,000) over the weekend, with 88,000 sales (USD 784,000) drummed up over five days.

The British spy drama The Courier managed to rise a spot as it slowed only 19% during its third weekend. The film added 37,000 viewers (USD 318,000), pushing its haul to 283,000 entries (USD 2.32 million).

Down two spots and 30% in its sophomore frame was the sequel The Croods: A New Age, with 33,000 seats filled over the weekend (USD 266,000). The animated film has attracted 207,000 spectators (USD 1.62 million) to date.

January release Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train continued its phenomenal run, rising 4% as it sold another 29,000 tickets (USD 256,000). The Japanese animation has now cracked the 2 million admissions (USD 17.14 million) mark, passing Tenet in the process to become the second best-selling foreign title released during the pandemic. It should cross Soul to take first place within the next fortnight.

Local melodrama Waiting for Rain eased 38% as it drew another 28,000 viewers (USD 242,000), boosting its total to 347,000 entries (USD 2.84 million).

Following a yearlong pandemic delay, Fast & Furious 9 is looking to rev up the charts this coming weekend as it looks certain to dominate the charts.
