  • Actor Oh Youngsoo, the Winner of the Best TV Supporting Actor at 79th Golden Globe Awards
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jan 11, 2022

  •

Actor Oh Youngsoo has become the first Korean winner of the Best TV Supporting Actor at the 79th Golden Globe Awards. At the awards ceremony held at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel in LA on January 9 (local time), Oh Youngsoo won the award after competing with Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass of The Morning Show, Kieran Culkin of Succession, and Brett Goldstein of Ted Lasso.

Showing his excellent performance, Oh Youngsoo played the role of Oh Ilnam, the No. 1 participant in Squid Game, the Netflix series released last year. Especially, the so-called ‘Gganbu acting,’ the chemistry he presented with Actor Lee Jungjae became a hot topic throughout last year. His lines in the show, including "Dude, we're Gganbu, right?" were also considered the best buzzwords.

Apart from Best TV Supporting Actor, Squid Game was also nominated for Best Actor and Best TV Series Drama. However, Best Actor went to Jeremy Strong of Succession, and unfortunately, Actor Lee Jungjae failed to win the award. Succession also won Best TV Series Drama.

Oh Youngsoo and Lee Jungjae are the first Korean actors to be nominated for best acting awards at the Golden Globe Awards, and it is the first time to win the award, too. Korean-American female actors such as Sandra Oh and Awkwafina had previously won the awards, but Korean actors with Korean nationality had never won an acting award at the Golden Globe Awards.

Through Netflix, Oh Youngsoo said, "When I heard the news of the award, I told myself for the first time in my life that 'I'm kind of a cool guy. Now it's not us in the world, but the world within us. I am grateful to you all around the world, holding the scent of our culture and the love for my family deeply.” He also added, "I hope you live a beautiful life."

Oh Youngsoo and Lee Jungjae did not attend the awards ceremony. Since early last year, broadcasters such as NBC have refused to broadcast due to allegations of various corruption by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which hosts the Golden Globe Awards, and large producers such as Netflix have refused to participate in the event this year. Accordingly, Oh Youngsoo and Lee Jungjae also did not attend the awards ceremony.

Squid Game caused a global sensation last year and is considered the most successful work in Netflix's history in both movies and dramas. The work, which was released in September last year, topped the world's Netflix rankings for 53 days, setting a new record for the success of the Netflix series. Bloomberg and other foreign media estimate that the value of Squid Game is around 1 billion dollars (about 1.1 trillion won), whose production cost is around $21 million (about 25 billion won).
