  • PARASITE Tops 14th Asian Film Awards with 4 Prizes
  • by Pierce Conran /  Nov 05, 2020
  • LEE Byung-hun Takes Home 2nd Best Actor Honor for THE MAN STANDING NEXT

After conquering the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Awards, BONG Joon-ho’s hit sensation PARASITE (2019) has come home to claim four prizes at the 14th Asian Film Awards, which took place in Busan this year for the first time. PARASITE (2019) won Best Film, Best Screenplay (BONG Joon-ho and HAN Jin-won), Best Editing (YANG Jin-mo) and Best Production Design (LEE Ha-jun).

This year’s AFAs also handed Korean superstar LEE Byung-hun his second Best Actor Award for WOO Min-ho’s The Man Standing Next, four years after picking up the same prize for Inside Men (2015), also helmed by Director WOO.

For the very first time, the Asian Film Awards were staged in Busan, in conjunction with the Busan International Film Festival and the Asian Contents & Film Market. Previously the awards had taken place in either Hong Kong or Macao, around the time of the Hong Kong International Film & TV Market and the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

Owing to the global pandemic, the ceremony was streamed online on the evening of Wednesday, October 28, with presenters and award winners participating with pre-recorded messages. The event was streamed on the websites and YouTube channels of the Asian Film Awards Academy and the Asian Contents & Film Market.

Upon receiving the Best Film Award, which was presented to him by Japanese filmmaker KORE-EDA Hirokazu, Director BONG expressed that “I am grateful to all the people involved with the Asian Film Awards for making it possible that PARASITE (2019) could become part of AFA’s legacy. I strongly believe that we will meet in person next year at the Asian Film Awards, shake hands, and enjoy talking with one another without masks… I believe that nothing can stop us from continuing to make films.”

After landing his second AFA Best Actor win, LEE said: “First, I would like to thank the AFA for the Best Actor award, and the actors and crew of The Man Standing Next. The chemistry between the actors in this film was a big part of why I am able to receive this award. Please stay safe, and I’m sure we will all be able to meet at the movies again soon.”
