1917 Returns to Top Spot in Empty Marketplace

New Record Lows at Korean Box Office as Covid-19 Pandemic Stretches into Mid-April
With a lack of major new releases and continued concerns over the Covid-19 pandemic, with governmental social distancing recommendations still in force, the box office continued to struggle in Korea reaching a new historic low over the weekend, since record-taking began in 2004. Just 98,772 ticket sales were reported over the three-day weekend, which was down fro 106,000 a week ago and 158,000 the week before that, while the local market share, with no new releases, dipped to just 5.4%, down from just over 9% a week earlier.
1917 rose to first place in its eighth week on the charts, during which it added 16,920 sales (USD 127,000), a 24% weekly increase. To date, the World War I drama from director Sam Mendes has brought in 759,397 viewers (USD 5.7 million).
After topping the charts last week, the Hong Kong action sequel Ip Man 4: The Finale slowed 36% and secured 12,960 entries (USD 98,000) in second place. The Donnie Yen vehicle has to date sold 53,967 tickets in 12 days (USD 387,000).
The highest performing new entry on the chart was the Russian horror Stray, which debuted with 8,746 sales (USD 68,000) over the weekend, with 11,954 admissions (USD 90,000) counted over its first five days on the charts.
Down one spot and 36% during its third week in theaters was the Judy Garland biopic Judy, featuring an Oscar-winning turn from Renee Zellwegger. The drama secured another 7,339 spectators (USD 55,000) and saw its take rise to 82,723 entries (USD 560,000).
Remaining a draw on the charts was the acclaimed horror update The Invisible Man which was down 20% in its seventh weekend in theaters. The Blumhouse Productions title added 6,596 sales (USD 51,000), raising its total to an impressive 566,216 admissions (USD 4.08 million), given that the film opened after the pandemic had started to decimate theatrical sales.
This week’s most significant new release will be the action film Guns Akimbo with Daniel Radcliffe, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last September.
