JURASSIC WORLD Chews Up Korean Box Office

Dino Sequel Sets Local Opening Day Record

Business shot up 65% over the past weekend with the entry of one of the summer’s most hotly anticipated global tentpoles. Consequently, Hollywood dominated the market share after a brief run of local success, accounting for 80% of all sales. Korean films fell back to 16% of the 2.51 million entries recorded.

Entering the market on the Memorial Day holiday on Wednesday, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom posted an opening day record in Korea with a staggering 1.18 million tickets (USD 9.6 million) sold, the first time a film has opened with over a million viewers on its first day. The record was previously held by Avengers: Infinity War. The Memorial Day holiday has become a major moviegoing day in Korea, having also set the stage for an opening day record last year, when The Mummy with Tom Cruise took everyone by surprise when it surged to a then-record 873,000 spectators.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom went on to handily top the weekend, drawing 1.81 million viewers (USD 15.24 million), the highest opening weekend score for a Universal release in Korea. Over five days, the blockbuster has already pulled in 3.22 million admissions (USD 26.67 million) which put well within striking distance of its predecessor’s 5.55 million viewer total.

Losing over half its screens, LEE Hae-young’s two-time chart topper Believer was forced down into second after slowing 59%. The local action-thriller added 401,000 entries (USD 3.36 million) to push its total to a stellar 4.5 million admissions (USD 36.05 million) to date.

Opening in a distant third place was the critically-acclaimed horror film Hereditary with 71,000 seats (USD 604,000) filled and 91,000 tickets (USD 751,000) sold over four days.

Not far behind in fourth was American comedy I Feel Pretty, which debuted with 68,000 entries (USD 583,000) over the weekend and 106,000 sales (USD 893,000) over five days.

Closing out the top five was another new release, the latest entry in the Japanese anime series Pocket Monster DP, which debuted with 53,000 viewers (USD 375,000) over the three-day and accumulated a respectable 134,000 entries (USD 944,000) since its Wednesday debut.

Prehistoric creatures are unlikely to let go of the top spot but the coming week should prove a fruitful one at the box office with both Ocean’s 8 and local comedy-thriller sequel The Accidental Detective 2: In Action entering the fray with solid presales on the reservations chart.
