LUCK-KEY Crosses 5 Million Viewers

Business was up 20% week-on-week as a new Marvel tentpole entered the marketplace while a local holdover proved resilient during its third week of release. Hollywood edged out local fare with a 66% share of the 2.65 million tickets sold over the weekend.

Storming into first place with 1.62 million viewers (USD 12.91 million) was Doctor Strange, the latest film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch in a new origin story, the film has already reached 2.4 million spectators (USD 17.99 million) in five days. With strong user scores and little in the way of competition, Marvel’s latest should continue to draw in massive crowds.

Losing half its business after a pair of supercharged frames at the box office, local action-comedy LUCK-KEY sold another 714,000 tickets (USD 5.21 million) to bring its haul to an enormous 5.64 million admissions (USD 39.85 million), making it the eighth most well attended title of the year to date, behind THE WAILING.

Opening in third place was the local horror Hide-and-Never Seek. Despite recent successes for Hollywood horrors in the market, this new title mustered only 125,000 admissions (USD 895,000) in its debut and 183,000 tickets (USD 1.24 million) since Wednesday, demonstrating the persistent difficulty for homegrown horror films to break into the market.

Tom Hanks thriller Inferno crashed over 80% after a so-so start, mustering another 56,000 viewers (USD 413,000) for a 12-day total of 625,000 spectators (USD 4.49 million). Just behind, The Notebook continued its rerelease by rising one place despite slowing 24%, adding 24,500 tickets (USD 189,000) for a lifetime total of 518,000 admissions (USD 3.06 million).

For the third straight week, controversial local doc Spy Nation remained atop the diversity chart, adding another 8,000 entries (USD 57,000), as it passed a major milestone to reach 109,000 admissions (USD 743,000).
