VETERAN Moves Up to 7th All Time

Ant-Man stayed in pole position during a quiet weekend that welcomed 1.73 million viewers to theaters, as Veteran continued its assent up the all-time chart, now ranking seventh. Though Hollywood claimed the top spot, Korean films held a slightly higher market share at 49%.

Marvel’s latest film slid 39% for a 695,228 viewers weekend (USD 4.91 million) and has now accrued a robust 2.37 million admissions (USD 16.81 million). Veteran was just behind during its sixth week, as it eased 37% and added another 379,776 spectators (USD 2.62 million) to its haul, which has now reached a staggering 12.49 million (USD 82.94 million). RYOO Seung-wan’s action-comedy is now the seventh most well attended Korean film of all time, just behind CHOI Dong-hoon’s Assassination, which added another 81,090 viewers (USD 549,235) down in fifth place during its eighth weekend. Its total is now 12.64 million viewers (USD 82.93 million).

Opening in third place was the local mystery thriller Deep Trap with Don LEE, with 159,308 spectators (USD 1.13 million), a respectable sum for a film lacking a major distributor. Slowing 41% in its fourth weekend was melodrama The Beauty Inside, stacking another 119,670 viewers (USD 834,262) to its healthy 1.99 million total (USD 13.27 million). The sixth spot was also occupied by a Korean film as the horror-thriller Office brought in another 75,942 filmgoers (USD 508,837) after stumbling 63%. Its total stands at 423,650 (USD 2.82 million).

Business is expected to pick up next week with the release of highly anticipated period drama The Throne, starring SONG Kang-ho, ahead of the Chuseok holiday.
