CJ CGV Screening Technology Now Operating in 475 Theaters

Theaters equipped with 4DX, a screening technology developed by the CJ CGV exhibition outfit, achieved record sales of USD 226.7 million (KRW 242.6 billion) in 2017, up 14% over the previous year. 19 million viewers experienced the technology, a 26% rise over 2016.

4DX, which offers a heightened cinema-going experience, with the addition of moving seats, smells, smoke and bursts of air, was developed by Korea’s leading exhibitor CJ CGV in 2009. At present, the company operates 475 theaters in 57 nations, including South Korea, China, the United States, Japan, Britain, India, Mexico, Canada and France.

129 new 4DX screens opened in 33 countries last year, including new markets such as France, Norway, Australia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Egypt and Qatar. In Western Europe alone, additional 50 screens are expected to launch in France, Holland, Switzerland and Belgium by 2020. With 62 new screens unveiled in 2017, China is the market with the largest 4DX footprint, with the format currently available in 171 locations.

"2017 was the year when 4DX became a globally established brand with about 20 million visitors around the world, including Asia, Europe, North America and Africa," said CHOI Byung-hwan, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX, in a press release. He added, "In 2018, we anticipate the growing of 4DX's global viewers and box office sales by 60% and we will continue to work on the global spread of our ScreenX technology.”
