4DX Format Now Available in 50 Countries

CJ CGV’s five-senses immersive cinematic experience theater format 4DX has been launched in Australia. The theater opened on October 26th in Melbourne’s Century City Village Cinema. Century City Village Cinema operates a total of 23 cinemas and 207 screens in Australia and is the number one company in the theater business in Melbourne. Last March the company established a partnership with CJ 4DPLEX at the 2017 CinemaCon, paving the way for them to open Australia’s very first 4DX theater.

The 4DX format was first introduced in Korea in 2009. In the 8 years since, the technology has expanded to 50 countries. That’s over 50,000 seats worldwide, which amounts to servicing roughly 100 million theatergoers in a year. CGV quoted, “4DX strives to find new global theater markets every year and to establish strategical partnerships. Starting with China in 2010, we were able to expand to Norway, France, Parts of Europe and Africa, as well as the Middle East this year. Not only that, we’re looking to expand the number of 4DX theaters with preexisting partners on a bigger scale.” After 4DX launched in 2009, it grew on average by 144% per year. The theater numbers are concentrated in China and Korea, amounting to 92% of all 4DX theaters. By November of last year, CGV had accumulated 300 4DX theaters, and in September of 2017 they opened their 400th theater.
