CJ CGV’s ScreenX immersive screening system has recently debuted in Japan. The company said that it opened its first ScreenX theater at Aqua City Odaiba in Tokyo on June 20th in partnership with the Japanese cinema chain United Cinemas.

The first movie in the theater was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. About 30 minutes of the film’s 129-minute running time was made for ScreenX. The audiences’ responses were hot while the theater maintained an average rate of 99.3% in seat occupancy on its opening weekend. In September, the company will next screen Korean zombie thriller TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016) to Japanese audiences. This film was a hit at the Korean box office in 2016, surpassing 10 million viewers. CJ CGV plans to accelerate its expansion to the Japanese film market by launching an additional 15 screens by the end of this year.

The cinema chain currently operates 84 ScreenX theaters at home including CGVs in Yeouido and Hongdae and 36 in seven foreign countries such as United Cinemas in Japan, CGV Madang Plaza in LA, CGV Buena Park and Las Vegas AMC in the United States, Wanda Cinema and Yaolai Cinema in China and Major Cineplex in Bangkok, Thailand. CJ CGV is targeting to make Screen X as a global platform of movies by 2020 with hopes to attract more than 100 million attendees throughout the world. Meanwhile, ScreenX has been selected as one of the ‘Virtual Reality Flagship Projects 2016’ by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning.
