Korean Indies to Screen in Los Angeles

This year’s AFI (American Film Institute) Fest in Los Angeles will feature a brace of Korean films, as HONG Sang-soo’s new feature Right Now, Wrong Then and KIM Dong-myung’s The Liar will both feature in the program.

Screening in the World Cinema section, Right Now, Wrong Then kicked off its festival run at the Locarno International Film Festival in August, where it earned the Golden Leopard and the Best Actor trophy for JUNG Jae-young. The film has already screened extensively around the world, making stops at the Toronto, Busan, New York, Vancouver, Tokyo and BFI London Film Festivals, and has also proven successful on release in Korea, where it has to date brought in 75,786 viewers (USD 546,977). Star JUNG also won the Best Actor prize at the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards.

KIM’s The Liar, which features top indie actress KIM Kkob-bi and will screen in AFI’s Breakthrough section, began its run at the Busan International Film Festival last year, and has screened at the Melbourne and Göteborg International Film Festivals, as well as other festivals in Korea. The film went on limited release last week in Korea.

This year’s AFI Fest will begin this coming Thursday (November 5th) and run through until the 12th.
