Will Adapt Joseon Era Novel THE MAP MAKER

Veteran filmmaker and producer KANG Woo-suk has set his next project, which will be an adaptation of the 2009 novel The Map Maker by PARK Bum-shin. The Daesan Literary Award-winning tome is based on the story of the Joseon Era cartographer KIM Jeong-ho who traveled the entire Korean peninsula to create the Daedong Yeojido map, the oldest known map of the region.

One of the top directors of the 1990s, responsible for the Two Cops franchise (1993-1998), and a number of major films in the new millennium, including the Public Enemy series (2002-08) and Silmido (2003), KANG set up Cinema Service, one of the most active studios during the boom of contemporary Korean cinema, and most recently helmed the MMA-drama Fists of Legend in 2013.

Active since the late 1970s, best-selling author PARK’s work has frequently been adapted to the screen, including his 2010 novel Eungyo, which became a film of the same name in 2012, starring PARK Hae-il.

Casting has yet to be announced and the screenplay is its final stages but production is scheduled to begin in summer with a release window being eyed for summer 2016.
