Director Hong Sangsoo returned with his 25th film this year, exactly 25 years since his debut The Day a Pig Fell into a Well put him on the map in 1996. His latest work, the black and white feature Introduction, saw the acclaimed cineaste return to the Berlin International Film Festival for the eighth time.

Introduction marked Hong’s fifth invitation to the Berlinale’s prestigious competition section, where just last year, he earned the Silver Bear for Best Director for his film The Woman Who Ran (2020).

While many of Hong’s stalwarts appear in the cast, including Yea Jiwon, Ki Joobong, Seo Younghwa, and Kim Minhee, Introduction largely switches its focus to younger protagonists, played by Shin Seokho, who has had small roles in prior Hong films and also worked among the directing staff of The Woman Who Ran and Hotel by the River (2018), and Park Miso, in her first feature film role.

Split into two parts; Introduction focuses on Juwon, a young woman played by Park who is studying fashion in Berlin, where she meets several people, including an artist and a family friend. Two years later in Seoul, we focus on Juwon’s one-time boyfriend, Youngho (Shin Seokho), who also meets a family friend, as well as an actor.
