Special Issue of Variety Featuring Information on Location Shooting in Korea

With Presentation of KOFIC Location Incentive for Foreign Audiovisual Works Program
On September 9, US-based popular culture magazine Variety is dedicating a special issue, named “Location Update: The Big Restart,” to international location shooting. Variety worked in collaboration with the Association of Film Commissioners International to provide the latest updates on location shooting in every country, and the Korean Film Council (KOFIC, presided by Chairperson OH Seok-geun) is also introducing its location incentive program for foreign audiovisual works. Here is an early peek, in substance, at the location incentive program offered by KOFIC as it will be presenter in the pages of this special issue.
KOFIC introduces Korea as “a place where tradition and modernity co-exist”. Among many places, Songdo International Business District, in Incheon, is highlighted as a place where one can feel the inherent charm of Korea and the elegance of the city. Talented film production staff and high-level VFX technology are the strong points of filming on location in Korea. According to KOFIC, as of 2018, there were 30,878 film staff members and 3,537 planning and production professionals in Korea. KOFIC is also introducing Mr. Romance, Keystone Films Korea, and Film Line as production companies that can undertake productions and co-productions in Korea.
The special issue of Variety also touches on Korea’s regulations regarding COVID-19. All people entering the country, regardless of nationality, must undergo a self-isolation period of 14 days. It also explains that people should wear a mask at all times when they arrive at the airport and refrain from coming in contact or talking with other people. In addition, KOFIC announced that it is operating a program to refund 25 to 30% of the film production cost (QPE) in cash. Projects that benefited from the KOFIC Location Incentive Program include the film To All the Boys: Always and Forever, Lara Jean (third installment in the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series), the movie #JESUISLA starring BAE Doo-na, the series Sense8, Marvel's blockbuster films Black Panther and Avengers: Age Of Ultron, and BONG Joon-ho’s Okja. In addition, Korea has 12 regional film commissions, ie. the cities of Busan, Cheongju, Cheongpung (aka Jecheon), Daejeon, Incheon, Jeonju, and Seoul, as well as the provinces of South Chungcheong, Gangwon, Gyeonggi, Jeju and South Jeolla.
Meanwhile, considering that production is being resumed in some regions, Variety presents in addition to this special issue a feature article about movie production resuming in Europe and North America. This feature article reveals the extent to which the film business is restarting, the novel coronavirus situation, insurance coverage, travel restrictions, and the works in production.
