Another Golden Age for Korean Film Exports by CHO Meanjune /  Jul 18, 2017
How and where have Korean films been sold so far?

Exports for films completed in Korea have reached a ten year high, surpassing the USD 40 million mark. This is due in part to TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016) which sold to 156 countries, and the global interest generated by the newest films from PARK Chan-wook and NA Hong-jin’s. In addition, the diversification of overseas sales platforms has allowed for films such as Pandora (2016) and The Handmaiden (2016) to be sold to Netflix and Amazon Studios respectively, further increasing the number of local film exports. Moreover, orders from China for Korean blockbusters, as well the use of Korean film technology services for overseas markets was the biggest since 2011.

Regionally, Asian territories are most interested in domestic films. Outside of China and Japan, Southeast Asian countries have become important importers. Additionally, export sales to Europe more than doubled from the previous year as popular directors from Asia had successful runs at Cannes and other major European film festivals. By country, the United States took the top spot beating China due to steady exports of genre films and sales through online platforms.

In terms of film rights, ancillary rights and remake rights have also soared recently. Last year, sales of film ancillary rights was USD 11.74 million, up by 123.9% from the previous year, while remake rights fetched USD 1.11 million, growing by 74.8% compared to 2015.
