Yun-seo (HAN Suk-kyu) is known as the best writer in Joseon. One day, he receives an assignment from the King to find the culprit who delivers a forged painting to the palace. He teams up with inspection officer Gwang-heon (LEE Beom-su) to investigate and they enter a shop by chance where HWANG (OH Dal-su) distributes erotic story books. When Yun-seo peeks at a page of the book, he falls for it.

Since then, Yun-seo draws up a story writing obscene words secretly. He writes indecent book series himself under the pen name of Autumn Moon. Soon his book becomes a best seller. To become the best indecent book writer, he asks Gwang-heon to illustrate his books. Moreover, Yun-seo gets inspiration from the king’s concubine Jeong-bin (KIM Min-jung) whom he is attracted to, and he tries more dangerous and daring behaviors.

Director KIM Dae-woo who made his debut with Forbidden Quest (2006) used to be a famous screenplay writer who had built his reputation with scenarios like An Affair (1998), The Foul King (2000) and Untold Scandal (2003). He is so good at creating sophisticated visual scenes and comedy and he combined the two strengths in his directorial debut film, Forbidden Quest.

The former represents an erotic atmosphere in scenes of Yun-seo and Jeong-bin while the latter includes the comic combination of HAN Suk-kyu and OH Dal-su, and their gentle but humorous lines.

In addition, Forbidden Quest made Korean historical movies a step forward. The film surely can be called well-made, in which things that could happen in the Joseon Dynasty are dissolved convincingly in the historical background.
