Beautiful Korean Bridge (1)

Regarding the following values –  historicity, artistry, aesthetics, functionality, and familiarity – the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs announced the 100 Most Beautiful Korean Roads after a contest. Stonewall Walkway, Coastal Walkway, Mountain Path and ten other bridges. Here is an introduction to some of these bridges.

Hoengseong Bridge: The Bridge that comes first under the sky

Hoengseong Bridge is located in Sangdae-ri Ucheon-myeon Hoengseong-gun, Kangwon province. It connects two valleys, and is the highest bridge in Korea. Driving through the bridge gives not only offers a great scenery, but also the impression of driving in the sky, which is how its nickname came from.

It is a four-lane bridge of 705 meters long and 27.6 meters wide. The highest pier of the bridge is 92 meters. It was called Sangdae 3 Bridge when first designed. Subsequently, there were three candidates for its new name: The Bridge to The Sky, Sosa Bridge, and Ucheon Bridge. However, it was eventually named Hoengseong Bridge.

Seohae Bridge: a pedestrian overpass over the blue sea

Seohae Bridge connects two places: Poseung-eup Pyeongtek-si, Gyeonggi Province, and Songak-eup Dandjin-si, Chungcheongnamdo Province. The bridge spreads accross the grand sea next to Asan Bay, which creates a great view during sunset.

The bridge is 7310 meters long and 31.4 meters wide. The bridge is the gate of Korean West Sea where is the northeast asia logistics hub, it economizes the transit time and the logistical cost between Seoul and Mokpo. The Bridge is composed with 3 bridges, Sajang Bridge, FCM Bridge and PSM Bridge in combining form and the height of its tower is 182 meters, the height of 60-story building.

Namhae Bridge: the Korean Golden Gate Bridge

Namhae Bridge connects Hadong-gun in Gyeongsangnamdo Province and Namhae Island, the fourth biggest island after Jeju Island, Geoje Island and Jindo in Korea. Namhae Bridge crosses the Noryang Straits, which has a historical importance. For instance, the naval battle at Noryang was the last naval battle of the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, and it had been used as a sea route to send numerous exiles to Namhae Island during Koryo Dynasty and Joseon Dynasty.

Namhae Bridge is the first Korean suspension bridge and is also referred to as the Korean Golden Gate BridgeIt is 660 meters long, 12 meters wide and a 80 meters high.

Oksun Bridge: where a lakeside with a cool breeze meets blue sky.

Oksun Bridge crosses over Cheonpung Lake, Jecheon-si in Chungcheongbukdo Province, and connects two small villages: Sangcheon-ri and Gwegok-ri. The current location of the Oksun Bridge was actually a quiet ferry harbor before the construction of the Chungju Dam. Oksunbon Peak, one of Eight Scenic views in Danyang, Cheongpung Lakeside and Oksun Bridge create a great scenery. The sunset over the Cheongpung lakeside from the Oksun Bridge is well known for its scenic view and boasts many visitors.

The name of the Bridge originated from Oksun Peak’s altitude of 286 meters high. It is a two- lane road bridge with a length of 450 meters and a width of 7.5 meters.
