  • WONDER WOMAN 1984 Repeats over New Year Weekend
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jan 04, 2021
  • VANGUARD and IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE Fill Re-Release Out Top 3

With public health concerns still very high over the New Year holiday, business was cut in half following last week’s surge. 150,000 viewers bought tickets over the weekend, with 15% going to domestic products.

Following its Christmas weekend launch, Wonder Woman 1984 had no trouble hanging on to the top spot, but nevertheless it lost two thirds of its business as viewers continued to be wary of theaters amidst the current COVID-19 infection surge. The Warner Bros film accounted for almost half of all business as it added 70,000 sales (USD 603,000), lifting its haul to 461,000 admissions (USD 3.82 million) after 12 days in theaters.

Vanguard, a new Chinese action film with Jackie CHAN, debuted in a distant second place with 12,000 entries (USD 97,000), selling a total of 20,000 tickets (USD 170,000) since its Wednesday launch.

Down 20% but up one spot, the re-release of WONG Kar-wai’s 2000 classic In the Mood for Love brought in 12,000 spectators (USD 98,000), with 60,000 seats (USD 467,000) filled in total so far.

Slowing just under 50% in its fourth weekend, the romantic drama Josée added another 9,000 entries (USD 72,000), giving the film 195,000 admissions (USD 1.61 million) to date.

Winding down its run was the crime caper Collectors, which sold 7,000 tickets  (USD 50,000). After almost two months in theaters, the film has reached a respectable 1.53 million viewers (USD 12.74 million).

With strict social distancing measures extended for another two weeks over the weekend, distributors are still holding back their titles, meaning that the road appears clear for Wonder Woman 1984 to clinch a third first place finish this coming weekend.
